In life, we often find ourselves in a constant chase—pursuing money, success, or status—only to realize that what we’re running after is as elusive as the wind. This conversation sparked between us during a simple family outing to the park, where we took our kids to play and fish. While our kids found joy in simply casting their fishing rods into the water, it made us reflect on how, as adults, we sometimes exchange meaningful aspects of our lives for things that may not truly fulfill us.
Trading What Matters for the Wind
Many of us make sacrifices in the pursuit of more. Whether it’s working long hours to earn a six-figure income or striving for material wealth, we often trade time, relationships, and even our purpose for things that may ultimately leave us feeling empty. This is what we call “chasing the wind.”
One of the thoughts that came to mind was how people give up what God has placed in their lives as a foundation to chase something intangible. Imagine watching the wind flow through the trees—it’s something you can see, but you can’t grasp it. Similarly, we may see others experiencing what looks like success and think, “I can achieve that too.” But is that pursuit taking us away from what truly matters?
The Price of the Chase
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of making more money or reaching a higher status, but at what cost? I meet with a group of men once a month to discuss faith, life, and purpose. One of the older men in our group shared how, in his younger years, he chased financial success and, in doing so, sacrificed precious time with his family. Now, he encourages younger men to be content with what they need rather than constantly striving for more at the expense of their loved ones.
A real-world example of this can be seen in the lives of high-earning celebrities. We look at people like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, or Kanye West—individuals with more money than they could ever spend—yet they continue to push for more. While we don’t judge anyone’s ambitions, it makes us wonder: what are they sacrificing to achieve that next level of success?
Learning to Be Content
We recently heard about a former rapper who made millions but chose to step away from the limelight to live a quiet life with his family. He realized that money wasn’t worth the sacrifice of his peace and relationships. He had enough, and that was enough.
For those of us striving to balance career success and family life, the question is: what is truly enough? How much do we really need to provide for our families while still being present? The world will always tell us to strive for more—if you made $200K this year, why not push for $300K next year? But at some point, we must ask ourselves: what is the cost of that pursuit?
At the end of the day, our goal should be to build a life where we can provide for our families while still being present. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can’t replace lost time. We encourage you to take a moment and reflect—are you chasing the wind, or are you building a life rooted in what truly matters?
